IRVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT: The Irvington High School staff will be dedicated to academic success through a rigorous and relevant curriculum that empowers students to become productive, responsible, and self-directed citizens. Through the collaborative efforts of staff, parents, and the community, activities will be designed to strengthen school pride and character among students.

IRVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL VISION STATEMENT: The students of Irvington High School will reach their full academic potential through exposure to a challenging and rigorous curriculum that addresses the learning styles of all students through differentiated instructional strategies and multi-dimensional assessments.

I am truly proud and honored to serve as principal of Irvington High School for the 2009-2010 school year. I anticipate a productive school year in which all students receive a thorough and efficient education. Through the efforts of committed administrators, well-trained staff members, supportive parents/guardians, and involved community members, Irvington High School students will be proactive participants and future leaders of our expanding global community.

Each school year represents a journey towards academic excellence. The following are the 2009 - 2010 school priorities:

1. Improve student achievement through instructional rigor and authentic assessments

2. Improve the school climate

3. Engage in on-going professional development

The high school’s curriculum includes challenging courses that focus on the development of higher order thinking skills. Courses such as Biology 103/104 and Chemistry 101 afford our students the opportunity to enroll in classes at Essex County College and receive college credits. Additionally, vocational classes such as Cosmetology, Family & Consumer Science, Foods, and Digital Publishing provide hands-on learning experiences.

The journey towards academic excellence has been supported by various school programs that enhance the students’ higher level thinking skills. The National Honor Society, Forensics Team, Future Business Leaders of America, Robotics, and college chemistry programs have fostered academics through various competitions. The National Honor Society sponsors a tutorial program and focuses on public service through food drives and fundraising for families in need. Additionally, the organization provides an annual scholarship for an I.H.S. graduate. The Future Business Leaders of America placed first in the Essex County Consumer Bowl held in April 2009 and placed second in the state competition.

The interpersonal skills of our students are enhanced by their participation in a wide range of extracurricular clubs and athletic programs. Our JROTC and Athletic programs have brought pride and recognition to the IHS family by fostering teamwork, enthusiasm, and commitment.

Leadership Council and Parent Teacher Student Association have helped enhance the avenues of communication between the school and the community. The involvement of the parents continues to increase as evidenced by longitudinal studies, which show an increase in parental attendance at numerous school activities. Success is an option for all students who attend Irvington High School. Through the hard work and commitment of all stakeholders, IHS students will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to their community.
